Creek Week Clean Up A Success!Sacramento Horsemen's Association; June 2002

Thanks to students from Mira Loma High School’s Environmental Education Project and to Girl Scouts from Troop 402 we filled two dumpsters to overflowing. Their youthful energy under the guidance of SHA members Teri Burns, Barbara McKnight and Kathy Dooner accomplished more than ever.

Big projects like the removal of the engine block and motorcycle frame from the creek near the SMUD station, typical projects like the removal of 11 tires, and nasty projects like removing old lumber with nails and slime were all made easier with the youthful energy of 42 teens who have been committed to creek restoration this whole year. They came with specific tasks in mind that had been bugging them for a long time too, like clearing the strainer dam downstream of the main arena. We all came away feeling accomplished.

Besides the usual cans and bottles the Troop 402 girls found a picket gate that they employed in their trash art project at the Creek Week party at the Science Center. They won 2nd place! Congratulations Girls!

Mira Loma teacher Cindy Suchanek was rightly proud of her heard-working group, some of whom REALLY needed the clean t-shirt the Creek Week folks offered after a muddy morning.

Thanks also go to the Sacramento Wildlife Care Association who took the small bird some of the students found with a broken wing. Wildlife Care volunteers rehabilitate injured and abandoned wild animals in our area.

T-shirts, hot dogs, mud, birds, kids, art….You should have been there!

I hope we see you next year. It’s always a great event. Those of you riding the creek trail these days should really notice a difference.
